Bespoke sea kayaking Anglesey

Denis was keen to get a couple of days 1:2:1 private coaching, as he aimed to improve his skills and move towards unsettled conditions.  Emphasis over the two days was effective forward paddling and smooth inside/out side turns.

For variety and due to strong winds different areas of the Straits was used ...

In the Swellies and time for some lunch ...

Using a number of buoys, these provided a super circuit and focus in blending forward paddling with edging to carry the kayak round.  Anticipation of the wind and any current, how much edge and power/pressure from the blade ...

We paddled up towards Plas Menai, had a break and then back on for some wind against tide, putting skills into a new context and for development.  Denis I hope you manage to find a lake/club close to you that is suitable, so that you can further continue to develop those skills, providing time in a boat, until your next venture out on the salty stuff!!

Following seas ... sea kayaking courses north wales

With a unsettled low and high pressure working for dominance the weekends weather was all over the place and as this was our getting to grips with moving water, swell, surf and wind, we would certainly find all of that!

With a forecast of F5/6 NE some shelter and conditions was what I was looking for and were I could also provide mix of conditions to suit individuals.  Following coffees, and a chat we set off for Y Felinheli, on the Menai Straits.  It was a little busy on arrival with  lots of small sailing dinghies, but we were soon on and out of each others way and paddling into a f4 head wind!

After some initial circuits (yep we found some good shelter) we started to explore, skeg, edge and stern rudders and use of speed, to either gain control on a turn or to further assist with balance and stability.  Ben above showing some good skills, considering it was 10 months between his last time in a sea kayak ... and almost on the ride!

Keith really getting in there, managing his boat well and keeping a good track ....

Some good active blade work, balance and gaining control ...

Denis getting a feel for the following sea ...

Katie and far to much smiling for me .... joking  ;)

Simon on one of the earlier circuits ...

Just before our lunch break, which was super sunny spot ...

Ben finishing off with some swell paddling!!

Had to postpone Sunday due to winds increasing to F7/8, with heavy rain ... oh hum, better to be safe than sorry!!

Well done to one and all.

Moody Skies - Bespoke sea kayaking, North Wales, Anglesey

When I was contacted by Dougy and Jacko, about a Bespoke sea kayaking weekend it was great to hear from as i had the pleasure of paddling with them both about 3 years ago and then on one of our Scottish sea kayak expeditions to Rassay and Rona on the East coast of Skye. This time Jackos grandson, Alex and friend of Dougs, Andy were also involved.

Saturday

After a coffee and a chat we got on the Straits, at Menai Bridge.

Both Alex and Andy had never been in a sea kayak before, so i was keen to start gentle and slowly increase the difficulty. The Straits was perfect for this and meant we were out of most of the wind.

Alex above getting a feel for edging the kayak

Oyster catchers were in super large flocks and were quite stunning ...

With some core skills we now paddled on towards the Gazelle, looking at ferry glides and eddy turns as we came across sections of flow and current.

After a 2nd break and this time at the Gazelle, we jumped on the ebbing tide to take the ride back and enjoy some wind against tide and the rougher water that this creates ... Dougy leading out with Alex, doing a super job ...

We then moved into the Swellies, as it was now into the last two hours of ebb, so much gentler and did some longer ferry glides, looking at angle and speed ....

Sunday

John had his party last night, but the 4 of them were well turned out ...

Plan was to paddle the 3k to Puffin Island and paddle round then back eddy hoping against the flow. The light was super with short squally clouds pushing through and even some thunder heard towards Aber and the main land ...

The Great Orme in the back ground ...

Under way, at the sound the wind had more Northerly in it, so the swell was pushing through the sound. We did a few turns and down wind runs getting a feel for the conditions and going through use of skeg, stern rudders and accelerating out of wobble!

All good we then began to cross, South of the central channel marker ...

As we were beginning the last crossing of the shorter channel, the sea was picking up, and I believed that the tide had turned 50 minutes earlier, so we now had early wind against tide ... we turned and paddled into the swell and with the current ... Alex above showing good skills and me getting lucky with the camera!!

Back at Penmon point, we landed and had some lunch and then wandered up to the top to look at the Sound. 20 minutes had passed, since we had crossed back and it was now quite rough, and it was useful for all to see the current, and the eddies from our standing point.

We decided to quit while we were ahead and paddle towards Beaumaris and get an ice cream ...

taking a break ...
On the way, there was a small hail shower and some super changing light ... thanks to Dougy for the ice creams from the red boat ...

Alex and John and a silky sea and moody sky moment ... on the way back to our start point and making the most of the current ...

With Beaumaris now in the distance we were quickly closing on our start point, after a super couple of days ...

Sonja and a reflective moment ...

Its worth mentioning that neither Zoe or Shamim, had any previous camping from a sea kayak experience this was new to them and Shamim had never wild camped before. Both had some previous white water experience, while Zoe had only began sea kayaking in May 2011.

Our Rapid Development Xpedition will now be bi annual, so the next adventure will be in 2014.

Celebrations and Frosty mornings, Cafes and Future plans

The morning after!

Calargary wild campsite was A super find, with toilet, fire pits, flat grass and a stunning beach. The evenings celebrations and reflections on our time in Scotland, passed as the owls began to hoot and the thought of our warm sleeping bags beckoned.

It was a cold night with heavy frost, but the sun was close behind, followed by mugs of tea. Tents down, we drove slowly away, stopping at each cafe and gallery as we saw them.

Back in Tobermory, we looked for a fish resturant and found the super "Fish Cafe" ... Yum best food in a long while and highly recommended!

Team feasting - The Best meal!

20 minute drive to Craignure and soon we were all on the CalMac ferry to Oban. Planning to camp somewhere suitable before Callender.

Ferry to Oban

What are our future plans? September 2013 will see a new Scottish sea kayak programme, delivered on Mull and with high quality accommodation, catered and open to partners.

Now with two highly successful Rapid Development Xpeditions (RDX) to his credit, Roger has been considering our next RDX. He has decided this will be in April 2014 and will be a bi annual event, which will allow him to pursue personal paddling aspirations and ensure he remains enthusiastic and passionate to share his knowledge and skills.

He plans now to rest once home, catch up on Coastal Spirit admin and prepare for next weekends full course.
