Storms and Winter Sea Kayaking, a Reflection ...

Nine Storms have impacted the UK this Winter, with three of those in 2016 - Gertrude, Henry and Imogen.  Yet in between these storms theres been time and space for some super Winter Sea Kayaking this January 2016.

The course I want to draw attention to is the Advanced course and this one in particular was the 2nd, 5* Leader preparation course I had run over the Winter.  The course was aimed at those who had done the 5* Leader training and wanted to work in 5* assessment conditions.  This was in a work shop format on specific skills and tasks or areas each person felt supported their individual action plan.

From the forecast we had the perfect weekend with Penrhyn Mawr working for some tide race action, some swell, wind picking up from the NW for the night navigation in Trearddur Bay and then a Skerries open water crossing on the Sunday with remnants of the wind.  It had been a long weekend with conformations, further learning and further action plans created ...

A Leadership model I have used over the years which I feel really works and may help to provide a useful structure is by John Adair and is called Action Centred Leadership (ACL) and works around three circles - Task, Team and Individual.  You may have a main Task for example of leading an Advanced journey involving a couple of tide races and then sub tasks.  A sub task could be getting the team of the beach, through the surf at the start of the day.  If we consider the Task: Whats the strategy to achieve the task most effectively? How are you going to work the team, team functions, giving purpose, buddy system, sub leader/No2?  and do any of the individuals need specific attention, encouragement, how can I use individuals so there work contributes over all to the team objective?

Generally its difficult, if not imposable to manage all three areas at once, so time is given to one of the three areas and once thats been achieved, attention needs to be given to the other areas.  If for example only the Task is focused on, one can probably see the job gets down, at the expense of the Team and the Individual!

So why not explore and experiment using the model below and enhance your leadership abilities and skills, as well as surfing that tide race wave!

Thanks to Tavi Murray for originally contacting me about the weekends and the idea.  And Julie Jones, Debs Heldon and Zoe Robinson for making the weekend work.  As for me, my personal learning was when you get a new paddle, remember to put reflective tape on it, just like you have on the other one.  So if you ever loose a black paddle at night it may then just have a greater chance of seeing it!!

PS:  Thanks to Zoe for finding my paddle, some 30+ minutes later!

Summer sea kayaking ...

These last few weeks have just been beautiful for sea kayaking. How good is the UK when we have settled weather?  Anglesey and the North Wales coastline is perfect for sea kayaking and can provide such a broad range from sheltered gentle paddles as an introduction to sea kayaking.  Through to the rougher water and offshore islands, for the advanced sea kayaker. With a fantastic progression for those at the Intromediate to Intermediate level.

Here's a few photos from just the last few days, bespoke coaching .... enjoy ...

Day 13 Around Ireland

14 nautical miles today and having done two short days seems to have worked well as Barry is feeling better! We woke to light winds and navigated our way through the islands. In to the last couple of hours of paddling, winds increased to a Force 4 offshore. Were now at a beautiful beach, East of Barley Cove but its a little public, so we wont put the tents up till later!
Were now well placed for getting round Mizen Head in the morning...

 Friday morning start...

Thursday nights camp in beautiful sunshine...

2nd day of paddling around Ireland

We passed into the county of Wexford today with some hard earned miles. 16 nautical miles and our slowest speed ever at 1.7k as we clawed our way around a headland with flow! We managed to find a sheltered lunch spot and even had a snooze! We were tempted to stay but following our siesta we now had current assisting us so would'nt be a good move! Good camp spot for the night and who knows maybe a new county tomorrow!!!

Blue Sky Surfing ....

I had received a text on Sunday night, from Barry Shaw who said he'd been in contact with Phil Clegg and surf was looking good for the following morning, was i interested ....!!

I do love my job, lets face it ... even at this time of the year there's magic days out on the sea.  I do love getting out my self and playing, experimenting and keeping my skills and ability sharp.  Some shuffling round with boats and a short surf board for Phil, coffee and off to Rhosneigr, and Broad Beach.

As we drove across I was beginning to feel the excitement and anticipation.  The Wind Guru website said 1.7 mt, 14 sec swell interval and with a gentle offshore breeze, the forecast was looking perfect!

Barry taking a few waves in the Gemini SP and Phil, just making sure he's not the target ...!!

Phil above and Barry running hard and fast ...

Barry popping his head out the other side ... and below Me in the Tiderace Xtra HV, considering going right .... and committing...

It was a super Spring blue sky day, with great clean surf, friends, fun and hot chocolates to finish with.  Lets see what we can do next week!!

A window in the weather

This was the first IntroMediate Winter Skills sea kayaking weekend ...phew ... bit of a mouth full and I was extremely pleased to see a favourable forecast.  With a wild week of wind, rain and flooding the week before and much the same forecast for Monday the weekend was looking stunning!  SE 3/4 increasing latter and 5/6 over night with rain.  And then F2/3 variable winds with sunshine on Sunday ..

This weekend was aimed midway to top at this level, due to some previous experience working at the level.

After meeting Helen and Peter and Andrew (on holiday from New Zealand) and Rebbecca, we created a plan, which involved swell, current and some wind.  Cemais Bay, to Middle mouse, all being well and back.

Doing a few circuits, as people get a feeling for the boats and Peter enjoys his coffee!!

Andy above in the first of the rough water ...

Rebbecca on the out side and Helen closer ...

We worked a few short circuits with the aim of using the body to assist a turn, and then as we were very close to slack water headed out to Middle Mouse.  We could see the whole of the North coast of Anglesey and as the wind began to gust more we headed back. The boys leaving the eddy of Middle Mouse above

We laded for some welcomed lunch keeping it brief and were soon back out and working a great inner flow, which earlier had been a gentle eddy stream and now was moving and being drawn out by the main flow, producing a good moderate sea.

Rebbecca and Peter, were given ferry glide out and ride the swell and surf up against the flow.  Then paddle back down and repeat.  While I worked more with Helen and Andy on eddy turns and then ferry glides using an imaginary clock face to work out the direction of the flow, to then assist with the angle to paddle out, to achieve the goal.  All were working particularly hard and Andy took a particularly chunky piece of swell that capsized him and moments latter he was back in his boat.

The sun had never really come out and it had the feel of a Winters day, but it didn't stop us ...

Sunday - After a reflection on the previous day and two potential locations, the one with more swell and surf was chosen ... Rhoscolyn.

Now this was a surprise start to the day with gorgeous sunshine, although we were all in dry suits and boiling!  We did some forward paddling work and circuits, and focused on inside turns and low brace.  Used these as we headed for Silver Bay, hoping for some surf, we did some rock hoping as we moved along the coast.  There was another team who had thought of the same idea, with Simon and Mark, who I new.

Surfing a sea kayak can be tricky, everything happens fast and theres lots to process and think about. But its a great way to progress skills quickly, as long as your OK with a few capsizes along the way ...

It was super and just right .. Helen above catching her first wave ...

Pete who has a strong and broad white water background enjoying the waves ...

And some more ....

Rather than one big break people snacked and took what they needed, which also meant their was often two on the water, which allowed space and those on the beach to watch and further assist them with their learning process ...

Rebbecca taking a bigger wave ...and enjoying herself ...

The sun was still fighting but loosing the battle as we headed back out to Rhoscolyn, to go through assisted rescues and self rescues ... Yep a keen bunch!

Helen with some fun and balance to begin with ... then a back deck self rescue ..

Andy doing a back deck (cowboy) self rescue, which had been demonstrated by Rebbecca.  While I worked with Pete, who had a strong roll and completed it first time.

It was a super weekend, with keenness and enthusiasm adding to it all!

Cream teas and silky seas

Kath and Sedge were back and this time with a good friend of there,s called Ed and looking for a relaxed weekend.  Ed had done very little before so a gentle introduction was the theme. So when I suggested the west coast of Anglesey, Sandy Bay to Church Bay for a classic real strawberry cream tea and then paddle back, it fitted the day!

It was a great sunny day, with enough water to allow exploring of the occasional cave and rocky channel and a super lunch break!

Day two and some mixed weather, so jackets were out to begin with and the Menai Straits, as Ed was keen to experience some flow.  We were towards the end of the ebb, so after working on inside turns, we put these with flow, considering speed and angle, developing the theme as we crossed the channel with a ferry glide, (pointing across the flow so as not to loose any ground).

The wind was very lighter after the rain had passed and the light and reflection was magic ...

There was loads of herons about and a few more egrets ...  we met Barry shaw with a team and stopped for lunch at Yfellinheli. Our return journey now had a gentle breeze behind use and two hours of the flood, so we were soon back at Britania Bridge ...

Ed, doing really well after two days in a sea kayak!

Kath joining us ...

Sedge making his way back with a ferry glide, in the faster flow ... and keeping his eye on the ball ...

The team of Kath, Sedge and Ed and another super weekend of sea kayaking on Anglesey.
