Kayak Club Sea Kayaking Weekend - Anglesey, North Wales, UK.

Saturday had a mixed forecast but was due to get better towards the end of the day and with the current beginning to flood later it would be wind with tide.  An 1100 - 1900 timing, looked like it would work well with a journey to Beaumaris for ice creams and then to Penmon Point for some current work and then crossing out to Puffin Island.

The far end of the island was great with shelter from the wind, loads of seals hauled out (we kept out from the shore so as not to spoke them off the rocks) but a gentle broad swell running, proving a good couple of down wind runs ...

The following day we had SW F2-3 and increasing ... with best part of the day ebbing a sneak past Penrhyn Mawr and paddling across Abraham's Bosom, so us into some spectacular coastline and scenery ... lots of rock hoping and close quartering being close to high water was a real bonus as we managed to get into pretty much each cave and gully ... well almost ... ;)

It had been a great couple of days and super seeing Shamim, Stella, Christine, Ian and Mandy again, plus a new recruit of Simon

Thanks to Mandy above, for arranging and planning the weekend and the bags of sunshine was a bonus ... ;) ..

4 star leader training sea - North Wales, Anglesey

What super conditions at the weekend with a windy and blowy Saturday and a blue sky Sunday.   Judith, Katy, Tracy and Gareth were booked on the 4 star leader training and with the new syllabus it took me longer than expected, to work through.

Moving and positioning in wind, contact tows and trimming the casualty to assist with direction, assisted rescues, towing, a short surf session and self rescues kept me busy and before i new it we were driving away in the dark!!

On Sunday after reviewing pre prepared tidal and route plans, we headed out to Rhoscolyn to work in some current and swell, with leadership positioning based round the principles of CLAP - Communication, Line of Sight, Avoid/awareness/Anticipate and Position of max use.  An opportunity to lead the other 3, deal with a scenario, incident manage and then gain feedback then followed.  We finished back in the bay breaking down self rescues ...

Today (Monday) was Coastal Navigation & Tidal Planning (CNTP) the theory element of the course and due to the wind and rain I was pleased to be inside ...

Next 4 star leader training is 29/30th March, CNTP 31st March and additional two days possible on the 1/2nd April to make it a 5 day course with the potential of allowing the techniques to be well practised and experience a mixture of sew states, wind and venues.  See here for more details

Summer Sunshine - Bespoke Sea Kayaking

It was good to see Paul after a month or so and see the changes he had made, through putting time into going paddling.  As he had never been out to Puffin Island we did a tidal plan first, taking into account the winds and then set off.  A broad aim of the day was around 3 star performance skills and abilities ...

We worked with eddy turns and a couple of ferry glides, before heading round the island.  The seals were pretty mellow and also enjoying the sunshine ...

There was a small swell so we took advantage and did a couple of rocky landings, just before lunch, which would also allow the tide to turn and generate some speed ...

There was the occasional bit f chop which provided good conditions and Paul, looked comfortable in the Cetus HV, its first outing since Ireland!

As we headed back to the start we had some wind against tide, which provided good conditions for a self rescue.  Paul went for a paddle float self rescue and managed this fine.

We headed back to Menai Bridge and sat looking back over a couple of video clips, working through an action plan for Paul to focus on over the next few months, before our next day out in October.

Flow, wind and magic light ..

This was the last of the Winters series of Perform, where the aim is to enable paddlers to develop over the Winter, keeping active so as the summer arrives skill set, understanding, body and mind are stronger.  Perform is my advanced sea kayaking course for paddlers who have completed the 4 star leader training course.  After coffee and a discussion on venues an A-B journey from 4 mile bridge, down the Cymyran Strait, round Rhoscolyn head to Trearddur Bay was the plan.  Thanks goes to Andy who was helping with the shuttle, which made the trip possible.

Tavi, Gary and Andy were out on the Saturday and Zoe joined for the Sunday.

By the time we were packed and on the ebb current had begun, providing a good jet of water to work with ...

And then we were off following the current out to the sea.  It was a grey day and the wind was cold and there was a lot of waders enjoying what the newly exposed sand provided ....

Now i've heard it said that the entrance to the Cymyran Strait is the coast guards No2 hot spot, (No1 being Puffin Sound) but to be honest never really experienced challenging conditions there.  That is until now!  The current was probably going at 2knots, with an off shore wind and swell rolling wind was 1.5 as max, with smaller sets in between.  I suggested some surf as it was pealing clean and Silver Bay round the corner can some times be dumping.

All three saw the sea bed at some point. With a successful 2nd roll from Gary and a tow of Tavi on his stern, while Andy completed a swim towline self rescue.  With various incident management techniques employed, what stood out for me was each persons super calm approach.  Good skills and some super learning.

After a debrief and hot drinks we headed on to Rhoscolyn, for some shelter and lunch.  The winds were now increasing, as we headed out to Rhoscolyn Beacon, at the start of the flood, and then on towards the head.  We now had a head wind and each kept a good paddle rate as we worked towards Trearddur Bay.  Rolls in the bay ... fair-play and then to Trearddur Bay hotel for hot chocolates!

Sundays forecast was f5-7 and from the East and Menai Bridge was taking a full hit.  We headed down to the other side of Britannia Bridge and experienced F3/4.  The Straits was ebbing so we sneaked up on the Anglesey side, under the bridge and worked one of the eddies.  It was a spring tide, so the eddy line was fairly boily.  Speed, Angle, committed lean and looking to wear you wanted to be (rather than at the boil!!) ... was the goal.  Gary kindly provided the group with a rescue, which Zoe took on, with Tavi giving support and Andy starting an anchored tow ... Tavi then left the raft.

We paddled on down towards Moel y Don, and working in buddies, various exercise's in positioning and approaching a casualty and repairing a hole under the seat of a kayak ...

We had some hail and super light, which sometimes is just so surprising ...

Once back at our start, some lunch and back on the water with some short circuits, into and down wind and contact tows ..

The cloud was now lifting and snow could be seen on the mountains .. Gary making the most of the conditions.

We wrapped up the day with hot drinks in Dylan's at Menai Bridge and individual debriefs.  It had been another super and challenging weekend, with much learning and growth overall, since the first course back in December.  New goals set and with the summer approaching, it can only get better.  Well done to all, its been a pleasure working with you.

A taste of Autumn sunshine

With the last sea kayaking Taster day and Discover sea kayaking weekend of the year, it was so great to have a magic forecast of light winds and sunshine.  After meeting the six people, having a coffee and a chat, we headed off to Moelfre on the East coast of Anglesey.

Paul on the left, and then Sarah and Jess going through a dry land assisted rescue.

The light was great and the surface super. We focused on the key skills of turning and controlling the kayak using outside edge. We explored the use of BODY, with posture change, pressure, squeezing and tension, considering how this in turn effects the Boat and the use of the paddle.  The emphasis needs to begin with the BODY, Boat and then the blade.

We then started to put these skills into a journey and paddled off down the coast, for a new venue -Daniel  above.

At our 2nd break and soaking up the sunshine, before our return paddle were I covered effective forward paddling, emphasising rotating round your spine, while keeping your paddle forward and out front.
